今天不是要談掛在飛機上的pod，也不是要講拿在手上的iPod，而是Print on Demand的縮寫。
過去有幾個朋友建議我寫U-2的書，但我一直不敢做這件事，因為這是一個重大的commitment，一旦答應了出版社，接下來就是要面對截稿的壓力，以現在的工作狀況來看，真的沒辦法說得準何時可以完成。另一個考慮因素就是內容：出版社為了商業利益，難免會做一些我們不想配合的要求，這時就是天人交戰的時刻。偏偏這種書都是屬於冷門的等級，一刷要賣完都不容易，再版更有如登天，不做一些妥協，可能就沒有出版社想出了。直到POD的出現…
今天上網找了一下，發現國內已經有幾家廠商提供自費出版或POD的服務（例如：華文自資出版平台、秀威資訊、印書小舖、udn等），有的業者更號稱一本也能印。現在出書不一定要靠出版社，接下來就是我自己的決定了。
不過動手前，還是先做個市調，以免到時白忙一場。如果要寫書，我會延續這個部落格的型態（當然會比較有組織，而不是東扯一點、西扯一點），從美方解密檔案的角度來切入。一方面這是我較擅長的，一方面也是要跟市面上以訪談當事人為主要方式的書做區隔。雖然缺點是沒有那種「第一手」的臨場感，優點卻是不會受到當事人記憶力的干擾，而且還可以更深入。
請問各位對這樣的書有興趣嗎？
Do it with Chris. He just wrote the Black Bat squadron this year…..
I mean, do a English and Chinese version on the Black Cat Sq, so it would sell in both markets. You do the Chinese version, he do the English version, both doing the research in the same, both do the writing, editing and translations in the final copy……

我猜找到這個Blog的人就已經不太容易, 更何況要做這樣的調查. 一如這個Blog 的存在. 我猜,你一定有一份為歷史紀錄的使命. 若真是如此,”誰有興趣?”要推演到往後的百年調查才算.
想到這段歷史可以被詳實完整的紀錄,很多人會感謝你,讓他們在日後可以知道這些曾經.
Bryan: Although I cannot speak for Chris, I don’t think he has the time. After the 34th Sq. book, he is working on another book about ROCAF.
想要做「市調」，是為了知道有沒有想要擁有這樣的一本書。之前不打算寫，是因為書是實體的，一定手上要有這本書才能閱讀，而且書會不見、會爛。所以那時決定把心思放在部落格上，因為只要上網，到處都能「讀」，而且Google會免費幫你永遠留存。
我認為部落格的另一個優點是只要輸入keyword，就可以查到相關的主題。但是中文書幾乎沒有人在後面附index，所以要查詢某個主題是非常困難的。但這也是部落格的缺點：缺乏組織，對serious reader是不方便的。
Never hurt just to ask Chris if he’s interest. After all, you have the nag of digging good sources, in both US and in Taiwan. Plus you could have help him to land interviews with 35th Sq members. I mean, it’s a good fit for you to become a co-author with Chris.
So, just ask and see if he’s interest on the project. It might not this year, but might be next year. I think Chris is dying to do another U-2 book…….

我只有一本咧。
沈小姐都寫了七年, 您可以慢慢寫, 至於出不出, 還可以從長計議.
聽您說可以慢慢寫，心中少了份壓力。不過如果真的決定要寫，我可不想熬上七年的時間。
我這裡是出過《歸來的軍刀》（周愚）與《我的回憶》（衣復恩），但這幾年應業務與行銷部門要求，還是希望文字口語化、主題聳動一點。
Just got Chris Pocock’s latest book, “The Black Bats: CIA Spy Flights over China from Taiwan 1951-1969”. Wei-Bin, your name is mentioned, as well as taiwanairpower.org, at the end of the book when he was thanking various people from Taiwan helping his book and did translation works. Just barely flipping through it, pretty good. It noted Chris took at least 10 years writing the book also.
As for 沈小姐所寫的那本書, I got it when I was back in Taiwan for a family emergency last month, pretty much shoot in and out, but got a few hours to browse through few bookstores.
And, no, I didn’t get to have tea or coffee with any (military) intelligence officers in Taiwan over various stuff. I think those gifts sent to various people did wonders—they might have burnt my file already…..
