第20轟炸司令部的B-29在1945年1月14日執行完編號28號的嘉義飛行場轟炸任務後，再於17日執行編號29號的轟炸新竹飛行場任務。當天共有90架（另一說是92架）B-29從中華民國成都附近的機場起飛，由於天氣良好，其中79架（另一說是78架）順利以目視的方式在新竹上空投下炸彈。以下照片是營舍與棚廠區被炸的情形：
After Mission #28 on January 14, 1945, with Kagi Airdrome as the target, XX Bomber Command “let go with the other barrel” on the 17th. The weather over the primary target, Shinchiku (Hsinchu) Airdrome, was clear and 79 (another source says 78) B-29 bombed the airdrome visually. The photo below shows the barracks and hangar areas being bombed.

關於B-29轟炸新竹飛行場，過去有兩種不同的記載。鍾堅著《台灣航空決戰》（1996）指出，B-29在1月15日轟炸新竹，「將貯存於成都的炸彈全部擲下」，兩天後的17日，B-29再襲新竹。事實上，從成都出發的B-29轟炸任務所需的油料與彈藥，都是經由所謂的「駝峰空運」從印度運到成都，如果B-29真的在15日把貯存於成都的炸彈全部用完，就不可能在17日又出任務。除此之外，劉鳳翰的《日軍在臺灣》（1997）記載1月10日及17日各有79架和77架B-29轟炸新竹機場。但是根據台灣總督府統計製作的《臺灣空襲狀況集計》，1月10日這一天台灣全島完全沒有任何空襲。
There were two different versions of story regarding the B-29 raid on Shinchiku. Professor Chung’s book in 1996 said that B-29 dropped all the bombs stored in Chengdu on Shinchiku on January 15 and then bombed the same place again on the 17th. Since all the ordinance and fuel for Formosa missions were all ferried from India “over the hump” to Chengdu, had the B-29 dispensed all the bombs on the 15th, they would have had no bombs to drop only two days later. Another book by Liu in 1997 pointed out that 79 B-29 and 77 B-29 bombed Shinchiku Airdrome on the 10th and on the 17th, respectively. But according to records by Japanese Taiwan Governor’s Office, there was not a single air raid on Formosa at all on the 10th.
這兩本書的出版時間都比較早，所以在資訊不如今日普及的情況下，難免會有錯誤，其實B-29轟炸新竹機場的任務就只有1月17日的這一次而已。而且這次任務不僅是B-29最後一次轟炸台灣，也是B-29最後一次從中華民國成都週邊機場起飛執行的轟炸任務。以下是新竹飛行場被炸後滿目瘡痍的景象：
Given these two books were both written in the 1990s, such errors are understandable. In fact, the Shinchiku mission on January 17, 1945, is not only the last B-29 bombing mission over Formosa, but also the last bombing mission staged out of Chengdu, ROC. XX Bomber Command pulled out of Chengdu at the end of January.

是否有資料可以查到, 新竹被轟炸幾次??
我是指B-29之後就不再轟炸台灣，但是換成其他的美軍飛機。台灣總督府有空襲狀況集計，可以大略統計新竹州被炸的天數，但無法計算到新竹市。

新竹機場在1945年1/17、4/1、4/4、4/12、4/13、4/15、4/17、4/28、4/29、5/4、5/5、6/19、6/20、6/29、7/8、7/11、7/18、8/8等18天遭到美軍轟炸， 轟炸日數據統計為全臺機場之冠。參見臺灣總督府警務局防空課，《臺灣空襲狀況集計》（1945年1月至8月）（國立公文書館檢索號：C11110408300至C11110409200）。
