In early 1976, AIDC was ordered to study the feasibility of installing 20-mm cannons on the HH-1H to convert it into a gunship. AIDC then studied the following three possible modifications:
1. Installed under fuselage: There would not be enough ground clearance.
2. Installed under fuselage with lengthened skid struts: The center of gravity would become higher, which may cause problems in strong crosswind landings.
3. Carried on both sides of fuselage: Four cannons could be carried. However, recoil would incur excessive stress on the structure.
As a result, AIDC concluded that the installation was not economically feasible and requested ROCAF General Headquarters for permission to suspend the research.
