After Mr. Ma’s spokesman described the relationship between Taiwan and China as one between two regions, not state-to-state, the head of the Defense Ministry announced that he would rename his organization the Ministry of Regional Defense, to be in line with his boss’ policy. “We are redesigning our new logo and we will also launch our new website at http://www.mrd.gov.tw soon,” he said. “The first 100 visitors can fly free from any air base to China.”
The Minister also said that he would rewrite the air force’s rules of engagement to honor the protocol signed with International Olympic Committee (IOC) which addresses Taiwan’s Olympic team as Chinese Taipei. “Only fighter aircraft marked with CTAF (Chinese Taipei Air Force) are allowed to engage PLAAF (People’s Liberation Army Air Force) fighters in air combats,” he said. “Furthermore, as a gesture to show mutual goodwill, we will let PLAAF fighters fire the first shot.”
