I was quite surprised when I learned that the A-3 0902, one of the only two ever built, had been withdrawn from service and put on permanent static display in AIDC. The implication is that there will not be any modernization plan for the AT-3 in the foreseeable future and that the air-launch HF-2 anti-ship missile program is all but dead. Actually I think 0902’s older sibling, 0901, should have been the one to retire first because 0902 had received a quite expensive modernization upgrade. I wonder how 0901 is doing now.
On a related topic, F-CK-1A 1417, previously loaned to AIDC as a testbed, has returned to active service. It was spotted on CCK Open Day, painted in the 7th TFG markings. I guess AIDC does not need it any more because they now have the newer and more capable F-CK-C/D prototypes.
Very sad to see 0902 retired.
Personally I think it is a very handsome aircraft.
Would be good as a “home defence” fighter as well.
I have a question with regards to the two small rectangular pieces to the rear left and right hand side of the end of the canopy of the AT-3. Are they identification lights or some other equipment? Would be greatful for any info.
Thanks!
