The following is one of the two scrolls presented to General Doolittle by the Mayor of Hengyang. The translation of the Chinese inscription is “Commemorating the spreading of terror in the three islands (Japan) by the brave soldiers of the American Air Forces. Respectfully presented by Chu Chiu-jung, Mayor of Hengyang. He flew 10,000 li, like the great Rukh.”
Pictured below is the other scroll, known as the “Red Scroll.” It was presented in behalf of the Hengyang city government.
Shown below is a plaque containing a fragment of B-25 “Whirling Dervish”, one of those taking part in the Doolittle raid. This plaque was presented to Lt. Gen. Doolittle, Friday night, April 19, 1947, at Miami Beach, Florida, during the 5th anniversary reunion of members of the Doolittle raid. The fragment was a part of the right nacelle. It was recovered by the Rev. Charles L. Meeus, a missionary, and presented to Bishop Paul Yu Pin (于斌), D.D. Vicar Apostolic of Nanking in Washington, who then gave it to Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt. She in turn presented it to the Treasury Deparment, which later sent it to North American Aircraft Corporation, the manufacturer of the B-25. The presentation to Gen. Doolittle was made by Alexander T. Burton, Easter Representative of the North American Company.
This concludes the series on Doolittle’s raid.
