Black Shield and North Korea

Posted on November 29, 2009

On January 23, 1968, North Korean military seized USS Pueblo (AGER-2) while it was on a SIGINT mission. On the 24th, President Johnson approved the use of Black Shield A-12 to find the vessel. Two days later, Jack Weeks flew A-12 #131 on a three-pass mission over North Korea.

Although the Oxcart made only three passes over North Korean sky on Mission BX-6847, more than half of North Korean territory was covered!

The good news is that USS Pueblo was found in a bay near Munchon (문천시), north of Wonsan (원산시), and the North Korean armed forces were not mobilized for any military actions.

This is where Pueblo was found:

Pueblo was found accompanied by two North Korean patrol boats:

After Mission BX-6847, CIA flew two more Black Shield missions over North Korea, including A-12’s last operational mission. The Pueblo crew was released on December 23, 1968, almost one year after they were captured, but North Korea has not repatriated the vessel yet. USS Pueblo later was moved to Pyongyang and has since become a tourist attraction. If you are unable to visit North Korea, you can still see USS Pueblo on Google Maps:
