1945年5月14日清晨，兩架美國陸軍航空隊第38轟炸大隊的B-25J轟炸機自菲律賓的林加延（Lingayen）機場起飛，每架飛機上都掛了四枚500磅傘降破壞彈（parademo），目標是台灣旗山的旗尾製糖工場。沿途雲層厚實且有陣雨，直到接近目標區才有較開的雲層，不過仍然只有其中一架飛機在糖廠上空投下炸彈，另一架因雲霧的影響以致能見度不佳而未能對目標投彈。上圖是當天在糖廠上空拍攝的照片，遠處可見旗山吊橋和更北邊的另一座橋（網路上的這個部落格有當天拍攝的另一張照片，可清楚的看見這兩座橋）。
Two B-25J of the USAAF 38th Bombardment Group, each carrying four 500-lb “parademo” bombs, took off from Lingayen Airfield on the morning of May 14, 1954, for an “Alcohol Busting” mission. The target was Kibi Sugar Refinery in Kizan in southern Formosa. The airplanes encountered rain squalls and a cumulus overcast enroute. On the approach to the target the clouds were more broken. But only one B-25 was able to drop its bombs on the target due to haze and poor visibility. The top photo was taken when one of the airplanes was flying over the refinery.
下圖是同一架飛機在幾秒鐘後拍下的照片，可以看到兩處發生爆炸。未能在糖廠上空投彈的那架飛機後來在南面的一處倉庫群投下兩枚炸彈，後來又在鹽埔把剩下的兩枚炸彈投下。
The same bomber took the following photo seconds later, in which two explosions are visible. The B-25 that did not bomb the refinery dropped two bombs on a group of warehouses south of the target with unobserved results. The remaining two bombs were dropped on Empo Town causing small fires.
