Before the Mutual Defense Treaty between the ROC and the US was terminated in 1979, US Navy ships often made port calls to Kaohsiung and Keelung. Thanks to the so-called Navy Cruise Books, which keeps many photos taken during the port calls, we are able to see what Kaohsiung was like in the old days. Since I am not quite familiar with Kaohsiung, if you happen to know where the photo were taken or the landmarks in the photos, please let me know. Thanks.

    USS Mullany (DD-528) 1968:

Judging from the stone lantern in the photo, I conclude the photo was taken from the Kaohsiung Martyrs’ Shrine.

    USS O’Brien (DD-725) 1965:

    USS Perkins (DD-877) 1967:

On the first sight, I thought it was a shrine. But later I found out it was called “Taiwan Provincial Chengching Lake Industrial Exhibit Hall” at the time. Now it is an aquarium.

    USS Piedmont (AD-17) 1968:

This photo was also mostly likely taken from the Kaohsiung Martyrs’ Shrine.

Looked like Taiwanese opera, usually played in front of a temple.
