Many thanks to Bryan C for posting the newly released 2009 open house schedule. Now that Taiwan government has downgraded itself to the Regioanl Administration level, the Ministry of National Defense Regional Defense Office appropriately scaled back the 2009 open house program in order not to provoke the boss across the Taiwan Strait. I also noticed in the news release that all of the official numerical designations of the military units had been removed. (For comparison, see the 2008 open house schedule.) Is this a sign?
Anyway, for those who do not understand Chinese, here is the 2009 Aviation Open House schedule in English, with official designations of the respective units:
- May 28 (Thu): Naval Aviation Command, Taoyuan Base
- June 27 (Sat): ROCAF Makung Air Base Service, Makung Air Base
August 14 (Fri): ROCAF 401st Composite Wing, Hualien AFB(Cancelled)August 15 & 16 (Sat & Sun): TADTE 2009, Sungshan AFB(Cancelled)August 22 (Sat): ROCAF Academy, Kangshan(Cancelled)September 12 (Sat): ROCAF 427th Fighter Wing, Ching Chuan Kang AFB(Cancelled)- November 14 (Sat): Army 602nd Aviation Brigade, Hsinsher Army Aviation Base
- November 28 (Sat): Army 601st Aviation Brigade, Lungtan Army Aviation Base
Two words: it sucks!
Which of these do you recommend making the trip from Taipei to?
I loved attending them when younger and working them when USAF EOD later on.
If you don’t have a car, then Sungshan AFB in August is your only choice. If you have a car but do not want to do a lot of driving, I recommend Taoyuan Base in May and Lungtan Army Base in November, both of which should take you less than one hour of driving time. Of course, you’d better make sure there are flying activities, which are usually announced two or three days in advance.
Hope this helps. If not, let me know or check my blog before the show.
With the high speed rail, you could have get to most western Taiwan military base opening day without problems. Just need to figure out which bus to take to get near the base’s front gate, or get a taxi.
Or you can ask here. Maybe you can share a ride with somebody.
Please note that the ROCAF Academy open day has been re-scheduled.
The problem with this year’s program is not only that it has been greatly scaled back but also that many open days coincide with special events or holidays. For example, Hualien AFB open day will take place on the Moon Festival dat, when it is extremely difficult to get train or airplane tickets to Hualien. The 602nd Brigade open day is set to coincide with Hsinsher’s Flower Festival, when streets of this small town are expected to be packed with cars. Taoyuan Naval Base will be opened on the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend, when many people go back to their hometowns in the South or want to take short vacations.
This is for the 2009 ROC Navy friendship task force open house around Taiwan, before leaving Taiwan.

Hello,
we are planning a trip to Taiwan end November this year. Luckily there will be an Airshow at Lungtang Army Base.
What can we expect from this show? Is there a chance to see the Thundertigers and other aircrafts in the air?
Thank you!
Sascha
Lungtan is an Army base. So you will not see Thundertigers there. Normally you can expect helicopter flying demonstrations there.
Please note that several ROCAF Open Days have been re-scheduled.
Thank you for the fast answer. Do you know, if there is a chance to see the Thundertigers end november/beginnig december this year?
Thanks an greets from Germany
Sascha
Since there will be no Air Force open days in November or December, I think the chance to see Thundertigers during that time is next to zero.
Did they, ROCAF/ROCN Aviation removed all the plane guards at Tao Yuan AB? From Google Earth, seems to have 5 ROCAF retired aircraft there, F-104, F-5, F-101 and others. But others that took pictures there during open base said only ROCN Aviation’s MD500 ASW helo left there as plane guard….
What happen to the 5 ROCAF planes? Razor blades?
They have been relocated to Hualien AFB.
The F-5 is still in Taoyuan, but it is now in a small park under road no 61.
Yes. The Tao Yuan gateguards now sit at Hualien.
AIRSHOW UPDATE: The Thunder Tigers performance and whole of the airshow in Hualien previously scheduled for August 14th has been cancelled due to ongoing disaster relief efforts following Typhoon Morakot.
Clarification: At least two of the gate guards are now in Hualien.
All the airshows or airbase openings in August or September had been cancelled.
What a shame what Morokot has done to this country. On top of the devastation, all the airshows were canceled. Sadly, I was staying just down the road from Songshan.
Greetings.
I am looking for any F-84s still preserved in Taiwan. I have been told by ROCAF Col. (ret) Su [an ex-F-104 pilot/instructor] that there is one at the ROCAF Academy at Kangshan AFB, and I see what appears to be one there on Google Earth, as well as two others on the island at the time of the Google sat photos. The online info on F-84s does not have any details on those delivered to or still existing on display in Taiwan. Can someone here provide a photo or any info to update the Wikipedia entry?
Kind regards,
