On February 15, 1945, twelve B-25J bombers of the USAAF’s 38th Bombardment Group took off from Lingayen Airstrip at about 0930 (Tokyo time). The Group’s 405th, 822nd, and 71st Bombardment Squadrons contributed four aircraft each. These bombers, each carrying two 1000-lb bombs, rendezvoused with the sixteen escorting P-47 fighters along the way. Their primary target was the railroad bridge over the Sobun River (currently Tseng Wen River) on Southwest Formosa, which was a new type of target for the 38th Group.

When they reached the primary target area, a 10/10 overcast was encountered. As a result, only four bombers were able to locate and bomb the railroad bridges. Another two bombers tried to bomb the concrete high bridge about one half mile each of the target (see the photos above and below). The remaining B-25 each bombed targets of opportunities, including the nearby Sinka (Xinhua) and Zenka (Shanhua) towns, or jettisoned their loads at sea.

The railroad bridge and the concrete highway bridge can be found on the upper-left and lower-right corners, respectively, of the following US Army map:

For comparison, a post-war reconnaissance photo circa 1947 is shown below:

    And the modern satellite image:

It was reported that a large hydro electric plant was seen at 22 55’N 120 33’E (near the current Meinong District, Kaohsiung City). The 405th Bombardment Squadron History included a photo of the hydro plant, which is shown below. The location as described indicates that it is the Zhuzimen hydro plant, which is still functioning today.
