Marc A. Mitscher presents a medal to Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle.  However, this medal was not awarded to Doolittle.  It had been given by the Japanese government to Navy Lieutenant c, who had received it during pre-war naval attach\u00e9 service.  Jurika donated the medal and wished to return it to a hostile government.  The bomb in the pictures is the same one as in the top photo.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>However, the captions on the backs of both photos above misidentified Mitscher as Halsey, another famous Navy officer in WWII:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_9.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Doolittle tied the medal to the tail fins of the bomb:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Close-up view of the medal:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_6.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The next photo shows that words had been written on the tail fins too:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The last three words are &#8220;Straight To Hell&#8221; but I was unable to read the rest:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_bomb_8.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The following three photos show the bomber crews are busy loading ammunition into the magazines in final preparation for the raid.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_ammo_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_ammo_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/doolittle_ammo_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This 500-lb bomb was about to become one of the most famous bombs used in WWII.
