While the martial law was still in effect on Taiwan, taking photos of harbors, as well as airports and railroads, were strictly prohibited. Consequently, few pictures of Kaohsiung harbor from that era can be found here in Taiwan. Fortunately, US Navy sailors took quite a few photos when their ships made port calls to Kaohsiung before the United States severed its diplomatic ties with Taiwan. The following are photos of Kaohsiung harbor entrance that I found in the US Navy Cruise Books.

If you had come to Kaohsiung by water in 1961, this is what you would have seen before entering the harbor:

USS Somers (DD-947) 1961

Looking out towards Taiwan Strait from inside of Kaohsiung harbor in 1974:

USS Samuel Gompers (AD-37) 1974

The following two photos show the outside of Shaochuantou (currently Lienhai Road) in 1956 and 1965, respectively:

USS Wedderburn (DD-684) 1956

USS O’brien (DD-725) 1965

The Japanese built a signal tower and later a weather station on top of the rock of Shaochuantou when they ruled Taiwan.
