On the morning of January 9, 1945, fifteen SB2C and 6 TBM, escorted by seven F6F, took off from the USN aircraft carrier Ticonderoga (CV-14) for an attack mission against Formosa. Their primary target was Toyohara Airdrome in central Taiwan. However, extremely bad weather was encountered on their way to the target area and Toyohara was completely obscured. The flight headed for south to look for holes in the clouds but found no openings until reaching the Takao area. A large airbase was noted through the openings in the clouds and attack was at once initiated. The base was later identified as Heito Airdrome from photos taken in the mission.<\/p>\n
