The Group’s 405th, 822nd, and 71st Bombardment Squadrons contributed four aircraft each. These bombers, each carrying two 1000-lb bombs, rendezvoused with the sixteen escorting P-47 fighters along the way. Their primary target was the railroad bridge over the Sobun River (currently Tseng Wen River) on Southwest Formosa, which was a new type of target for the 38th Group.

When they reached the primary target area, a 10/10 overcast was encountered.
