Worth noting in this oblique photo is Tainan North Airfield.  But exactly where was it?  I found the photo was actually based on the original (see the photo below) taken on March 1, 1944:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=550 alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/tainan_1a.jpg\" \/><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw\/GIArchive\/\" target=_blank>\u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u6d77\u5916\u6b77\u53f2\u5716\u8cc7\u8207\u5178\u85cf (Via Academia Sinica)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>\u5c40\u90e8\u653e\u5927\u5f8c\uff08\u898b\u4e0b\u5716\uff09\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u770b\u898b\u88ab\u6a19\u793a\u70ba\u53f0\u5357\uff08\u5317\uff09\u98db\u884c\u5834\u7684\u662f\u4e2d\u592e\u4e00\u689d\u984f\u8272\u8f03\u6dfa\u7684\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\u5340\u57df\uff0c\u53e6\u5916\u6ce8\u610f\u5728\u7167\u7247\u7684\u5de6\u534a\u90e8\u4e2d\u9593\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u9084\u6709\u4e00\u689d\u984f\u8272\u8f03\u6df1\u7684\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\u3002\u900f\u904e\u7167\u7247\u4e0a\u7684\u5730\u8c8c\uff0c\u5c31\u4e0d\u96e3\u627e\u51fa\u9019\u500b\u5340\u57df\u7684\u6b63\u78ba\u4f4d\u7f6e\u3002<br \/>The area around this &#8220;Tainan North Airfield&#8221; is shown in the enlarged version below.  The so-called airfield is the  rectangle in the middle.  Note there is another rectangular strip, which looks a bit darker, on the left-hand side.  With this image, it was not too difficult to pinpoint the location.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=550 alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/tainan_2.jpg\" \/><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw\/GIArchive\/\" target=_blank>\u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u6d77\u5916\u6b77\u53f2\u5716\u8cc7\u8207\u5178\u85cf (Via Academia Sinica)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>\u4e0a\u5716\u6db5\u84cb\u7684\u5340\u57df\u5927\u81f4\u5982\u4e0b\u9762\u9019\u5f351921\u5e74\u7684\u5730\u5716\u6240\u793a\uff08\u7531\u65bc\u4e0a\u9762\u7167\u7247\u7684\u5317\u65b9\u4f4d\u65bc\u53f3\u4e0b\u89d2\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5fc5\u9808\u628a\u7167\u7247\u9006\u6642\u91dd\u65cb\u8f49\uff0c\u624d\u80fd\u8ddf\u4ee5\u4e0b\u7684\u5730\u5716\u6bd4\u5c0d\uff09\uff0c\u88ab\u6a19\u793a\u70ba\u53f0\u5357\uff08\u5317\uff09\u98db\u884c\u5834\u7684\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\u4e26\u6c92\u6709\u51fa\u73fe\u5728\u5730\u5716\u4e0a\uff0c\u4f46\u662f\u5b83\u5c31\u4f4d\u65bc\u5716\u4e0a\u8a3b\u660e\u7df4\u5175\u5834\u7684\u4f4d\u7f6e\u3002\u81f3\u65bc\u4e0a\u5716\u984f\u8272\u8f03\u6df1\u7684\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\uff0c\u539f\u4f86\u662f\u4e00\u5ea7\u9776\u5834\uff08\u5c04\u64ca\u5834\uff09\u3002<br \/>In the 1921 Japanese map below, the location of the &#8220;airfield&#8221; is the drilling ground (\u7df4\u5175\u5834) on the upper left-hand side.  (Since the photo above was looking southwest, you would have to rotate it counterclockwise to get the same orientation as that of the map.)  It turns out that the other rectangular strip in the photo above was a shooting range (\u5c04\u64ca\u5834).<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=550 alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/tainan_3.jpg\" \/><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw\/GIArchive\/\" target=_blank>\u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u6d77\u5916\u6b77\u53f2\u5716\u8cc7\u8207\u5178\u85cf (Via Academia Sinica)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>\u7f8e\u8ecd\u57281944\u5e742\u6708\u7684\u4e00\u4efd\u60c5\u5831\u5206\u6790\u7528\u4e86\u4e0b\u9762\u9019\u5f351943\u5e7411\u67087\u65e5\u7684\u540c\u5340\u57df\u7167\u7247\uff0c\u4e0d\u904e\u7167\u7247\u4e0a\u537b\u770b\u4e0d\u5230\u90a3\u584a\u6a19\u793a\u70ba\u6a5f\u5834\u7684\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u53ef\u4ee5\u5224\u5b9a\u9019\u584a\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\u5340\u57df\u7684\u8208\u5efa\u65e5\u671f\u4ecb\u65bc1943\u5e7411\u6708\u548c1944\u5e743\u6708\u4e4b\u9593\u3002<br \/>A February 1944 intelligence analysis report used the following photo taken on November 7, 1943.  It is worth noting that the so-called Tainan North Airfield cannot be found where it is supposed to be.  So it must have been built between November 1943 and March 1944.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=550 alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/tainan_4.jpg\" \/><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw\/GIArchive\/\" target=_blank>\u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u6d77\u5916\u6b77\u53f2\u5716\u8cc7\u8207\u5178\u85cf (Via Academia Sinica)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>\u7f8e\u8ecd\u98db\u6a5f\u57281944\u5e743\u67081\u65e5\u4e5f\u62cd\u651d\u4e86\u9019\u500b\u5340\u57df\u7684\u5782\u76f4\u7167\u76f8\uff08\u898b\u4e0b\u5716\uff09\uff0c\u6211\u628a\u9019\u5f35\u7167\u7247\u5229\u7528Google Earth\u4f5c\u5957\u758a\uff0c\u767c\u73fe\u6240\u8b02\u7684\u53f0\u5357\uff08\u5317\uff09\u98db\u884c\u5834\u9577\u7d04830\u516c\u5c3a\u3001\u5bec\u7d04105\u516c\u5c3a\u3002\u96d6\u7136\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u5927\u5c0f\u8981\u8b93\u4e8c\u6230\u6642\u671f\u7684\u98db\u6a5f\u8d77\u964d\u4e26\u975e\u96e3\u4e8b\uff0c\u537b\u6bd4\u7576\u6642\u4f4d\u65bc\u53f0\u7063\u7684\u5176\u4ed6\u9577\u689d\u5f62\u98db\u884c\u5834\u8981\u5c0f\u7684\u591a\uff0c\u9019\u4e9b\u98db\u884c\u5834\u7684\u9577\u5ea6\u7d55\u5927\u591a\u6578\u90fd\u57281500\u516c\u5c3a\u4ee5\u4e0a\uff0c\u6bd4\u8f03\u77ed\u7684\u91d1\u5c71\u98db\u884c\u5834\u4e5f\u67091200\u516c\u5c3a\u9577\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\u6211\u61f7\u7591\u7f8e\u8ecd\u767c\u73fe\u7684\u53f0\u5357\uff08\u5317\uff09\u98db\u884c\u5834\u53ef\u80fd\u662f\u500b\u6b3a\u6575\u7684\u5047\u6a5f\u5834\uff0c\u53ea\u662f\u5f92\u5177\u98db\u884c\u5834\u7684\u5916\u5f62\u800c\u5df2\u3002<br \/>But was it an airfield at all?  I overlaid the following March 1, 1944, vertical aerial photo on Google Earth to measure its dimension, which is about 830 x 105 m (2710 x 345 ft).  Although the size was large enough for WWII-ear aircraft to take off and land, it was considerably smaller than other single-strip airfields on Formosa at that time, which normally had a runway of 1500 m (5000 ft) in length.  So I suspect it was a decoy.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=550 alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/tainan_5.jpg\" \/><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw\/GIArchive\/\" target=_blank>\u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u6d77\u5916\u6b77\u53f2\u5716\u8cc7\u8207\u5178\u85cf (Via Academia Sinica)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>\u9019\u500b\u9577\u689d\u5f62\u5340\u57df\u5728\u4e0b\u9762\u9019\u5f351944\u5e748\u670825\u65e5\u7684\u7167\u7247\u4e0a\u5c31\u770b\u4e0d\u5230\u4e86\uff0c\u5927\u6982\u662f\u539f\u4f86\u7684\u5730\u9762\u9577\u51fa\u4e86\u8349\uff0c\u6625\u590f\u5929\u7684\u8349\u53c8\u9577\u5f97\u5feb\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5916\u5f62\u5c31\u4e0d\u898b\u4e86\u3002<br \/>Whatever it was, it was short-lived. In the following photo, taken on August 25, 1944, nothing could be found on its original location.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=550 alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/taiwanairpower.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/tainan_7.jpg\" \/><br \/><small><a href=\"http:\/\/gis.rchss.sinica.edu.tw\/GIArchive\/\" target=_blank>\u4e2d\u592e\u7814\u7a76\u9662\u6d77\u5916\u6b77\u53f2\u5716\u8cc7\u8207\u5178\u85cf (Via Academia Sinica)<\/a><\/small><\/p>\n<p>\u5728\u4e0b\u9762\u9019\u5f351945\u5e741\u670813\u65e5\u7684\u7a7a\u7167\u88e1\uff0c\u9084\u662f\u770b\u4e0d\u5230\u539f\u4f86\u7684\u9577\u65b9\u5f62\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u66f4\u76f8\u4fe1\u5b83\u662f\u5047\u6a5f\u5834\u3002\u5982\u679c\u5b83\u78ba\u5be6\u662f\u5047\u6a5f\u5834\uff0c\u4e5f\u628a\u7f8e\u570b\u4eba\u7d66\u9a19\u904e\u53bb\u4e86\uff08\u7136\u800c\u4e5f\u53ea\u662f\u66ab\u6642\u88ab\u9a19\u800c\u5df2\uff09\u3002<br \/>Again, nothing on the January 13, 1945, photo below.  So I am more convinced that what the American analysts had found on the March 1, 1944, reconnaissance photo as &#8220;Tainan North Airfield&#8221; was in fact a decoy.
