Four PV-1 Venturas of the VPB-137 took off from Clark Field on Luzon in the morning of May 18, 1945, for a strike mission on a Sugar Refinery/Butanol Plant at Taito, Formosa. They approached the target from the sea at minimum altitude. All planes dropped three 500-lb bombs directly in the target buildings, only one bomb falling short. While going over the target, the turret of one plane was hit by a 25-mm shell. The turret gunner’s hands were riddled with shrapnel. The strike group then proceeded northward up the valley stretching up the east Formosa coast from Taito to Karenko, attacking targets of opportunity.
In the following reconnaissance photo taken on May 31, 1945, some of the buildings that appeared in the strike photo are indicated by the corresponding letters. It is the clear that the strike group were flying in the southeast-to-northwest (lower-right to upper-left) direction, as described in the action report.
