Among the fourteen executed POWs, “J’. “C”. Buchanan, Delbert H. Carter, Donald K. Hathaway, John Roberson Parker, and Wayne W. Wilson were the crew on PB4Y-1 BuNo. 38738 of VPB-117. In January 1945, VPB-117 was based at Tacloban Airstrip on Leyte, P.I. Its mission at that time, as per the War Diary, was to “cover the Philippine Area, coastlines of Formosa, Indo-China and China, within a radius of one thousand miles of Leyte Island. The PB4Y-1 was shot down on January 28, 1945, during a routine patrol mission to Formosa and China coasts:

VPB-117’s action report on January 22, 1945, provided the information on each crew member’s function (note that Parker was not listed in this document):

After the shootdown, Ohio’s Coshocton Tribune wrote about the missing of Wilson , who was from nearby Guernsey County, on February 15 (below left). The same newspaper published another piece about Wilson when it learned that Wilson had been executed (below right).

The newspaper said the Navy disclosed no additional details of Wilson’s death. Indeed, very few details about the shootdown were available. The Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons published by the US Navy stated “On 28 January Lieutenant (jg) Robert E. White, Jr., and crew were shot down while on a patrol to Formosa and the China Coast. The co-pilot and five crew members survived the crash and remained prisoners-of-war until after V-J Day.” This description was not entirely correct because we now know five crew were executed. The co-pilot Pairtz was very likely taken to Ofuna POW Camp in Japan for further interrogation.

In June 2005, Taiwan POW Camp Memorial Society held a memorial service at the former Taihoku Prison site, which John R. Parker’s brother Charles and his two sons attended. This event was covered in the Society’s Spring-Summer 2005 Newsletter which included the photos of four crew.

It would be very nice if you could provide me with a copy of this blog. I would attach it to Lt White’s Ancestry.com page which is part of my family tree. He was my mother’s only first cousin, and they were very close. This is the only record I have been able to find which gives the date of the crash and hence his death, and what happened to the rest of the crew.

Thank you very much for considering my request.
