Featured in the above newspaper clipping were US Navy Lt. Harwood S. Sharp and his wife Irene. Sharp was in the newspaper because his SB2C-1C Helldiver was badly damaged after attacking a Japanese aircraft carrier on June 20, 1944. Sharp made a water landing afterwards and was rescued by the destroyer USS Miller, together with his Radio Operator/Tail Gunner James R. Langiotti.

During the attack mission, Sharp and Langiotti each managed to shoot and damage a Japanese fighter. The following table was taken from the war diary of USS Bunker Hill (CV-17).

On October 12, 1944, aircraft taking off from aircraft carriers of US Navy Task Force 38 struck Formosa hard. Sharp and Langiotti partnered once again and launched from Bunker Hill with ten other VB-8 SB2C-3 bomers. Their target was Matsuyama Airdrome in Taihoku (Taipei). Unfortunately, Sharp’s plane was shot and made a forced landing off Tamsui. The following report has more details (click to enlarge the image):

According to declassified Japanese documents, Sharp and Langittio were captured in a farm house in Taoyuan on October 24. They were then interrogated by the Japanese Army. The following two images are part of their interrogation reports, which show that Sharp and Langiotti were from Oakland, California, and Orlando, Florida, respectively. Both were only 22 years old.

Both Sharp and Langiotti were tried by the Japanese Army in May 1945 with twelve other American airmen. All fourteen were sentenced to death and were executed in Taihoku Prison on June 19. Their ash urns were returned to the US government after the war. In April 1948, ashes of Sharp and Langiotti were scattered over Pacific Ocean near Hawaii. Sharp was again featured in the newspaper, this time with his longtime buddy Langiotti:
