• 在台北刑務所被日軍處決的美軍戰俘 American POWs Executed by Japanese Army in Taihoku Prison (Part 2)

    在14名被日軍處決的美軍俘虜中,Ralph R. Hartley中尉是唯一一位美國陸軍航空隊的戰鬥機飛行員。他在1945年2月27日駕駛P-47D(美軍序號42-29068)從菲律賓呂宋島上的曼加爾丹機場(Mangaldan Strip)起飛,到台灣上空執行Fighter Sweep任務。根據當天一同執行任務的Darrel J. Laird上尉在事後所做的陳述,他們在Hogen(可能是指豐原?)附近發現日軍飛機並進行纏鬥,但是Hartley中尉在過程中失去蹤影,美軍友機幾次嘗試聯繫都無效後返航(詳細陳述請見以下文件)。
    Among the 14 slain American airmen, Ralph R. Hartley was the sole US Army Air Corps (USAAC) fighter pilot. On February 27, 1945, Hartley took off in P-47D 42-29068 from Luzon’s Mangaldan Strip for a fighter sweep mission over Formosa. According to the statement made by his element leader Captain Darrel J. Laird (the full document is shown below), Hartley disappeared after engaging Japanese aircraft near Hogen in central Formosa.

    下圖顯示Hartley失蹤的大致位置(X記號),Tosei是東勢,Tansi則是潭子,因為我認為Hogen就是豐原,但不清楚為什麼地圖沒有用豐原的日語發音Toyohara,也許是怕跟美軍稱為Toyohara的公館飛行場混淆吧?
    The cross in the following map indicated the approximate location where Hartley disappeared. Tosei referred to Dongshi in Taichung County while Tansi referred to Tanzi. So Hogen mostly likely meant Fengyuan. But it was not clear why they did not use the Japanese pronunication of Fengyuan, Toyohara, to refer to the city. Probably it was because Toyohara had been used to name the airfield which is now called Ching Chuan Kang.

    The USAAC had attempted twice to search Hartley, though to no avail.

    1945年3月5日,美國陸軍航空隊把Hartley中尉列為作戰失蹤(Missing in Action),但報告也指出,他依然有存活的可能。
    On March 5, 1945, the USAAC declared Lt. Hartley “Missing in Action”. However, the report also said “There is a possibility of his survival.”
